Scott Blackson & The Soap Fairy, Inc.

Mold_pour As is the case with many successful soap makers, Scott Blackson, owner of The Soap Fairy, Inc. stumbled into soap making through a stroke of fate.  While taking classes toward his master’s degree in natural health, Scott was prompted to create soap for one of his classes.  During his research he found that most recipes at that time were based on animal ingredients.  Being a vegetarian, Scott was inspired to create his own soap recipe.  It was love at first batch.  Very soon, Scott’s love of soap making overflowed his home.  To make room for more soap, bars were gifted into the hands of family and friends.   When the recipients returned for more soap, Scott’s new hobby began sprouting into a new business.  Through hard work, determination, and lots of soap making, Scott’s business has passed the 12 year mark with a 2000 square foot soap factory, two retail locations, and seven employees.

Being one of our earliest FromNatureWithLove.com customers, Scott Blackson and The Soap Fairy, Inc. are particularly near to our hearts.  We were very excited when Scott agreed to participate in our Interview Series

What are some of the signature products, elements or differences about your company that set it apart from the rest? What makes your company special?

Our signature products include a line of “Sea Soaps”.  Since we are in a summer resort town near the beach, we have soaps that have light, breezy, ocean-y scents, with names like “Down by the Seashore”, “Ocean Breeze”, “ Seaweed”, etc.  We make lotions to match and we offer custom bath salts as well.

We also have a newly designed men’s line, featuring bold masculine scents and newly updated packaging.  Our men’s soaps are packaged in black boxes.  The after shave lotions are in black bottles.   The look is decidedly masculine as are the three fragrance blends.  Each scent blend is available in soap, after shave lotion and skin exfoliating scrubs.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I am a jack of all trades with a short attention span.   I like to be creative in many different ways.   Running a soap company gives me the opportunity to move through many projects throughout the day from scent blending, recipe development, web design, and designing and writing the company newsletter.   My background is in photography.  I was a freelance photographer in Los Angeles in the 80’s and believe it or not, my inspiration for making soap came from my love of color and texture and creating something from scratch.  The scent blending came naturally to me and added another dimension to the creativity of other art forms.  Being a vegetarian and fairly health conscious, I became appalled at all the junk in the food we eat and then discovered that the junk is even worse in the products we put on our skin.  I’ve set out to make products that have fewer bad ingredients, many more good ingredients and products that are still fragrant, colorful and fun to use.

Do you have any other great passions or hobbies (other than natural skincare and entrepreneurship?)

I am a wannabe artist.  I currently am taking pottery courses (and if hand print ashtrays and tiny bowls ever make a come back, I’m likely to start a new business).  I love working with my hands.  I bought a “fixer upper” house several years back.  It had “good bones” but was built in the 1940’s.  There is always a project for me to work on if I can find the extra time.  I am also a student of American Sign Language and have an interest in signing and the deaf culture.

Where are your products available?
You can find everything we make on our website at www.soapfairy.com, or at either one of our two retail stores:  One is in Milford, DE and the other is in Lewes, DE.  If you happen to be in Japan, you can find them at Tree of Life handmade soaps stores, or at various gift and retail shops throughout the U.S.

What are some of your immediate goals for The Soap Fairy, Inc.?

My immediate goals are to settle down and enjoy life a bit.  I’ve worked way too many hours over the last 10 years.  My business had totally consumed my life.  I recently underwent surgery to repair a damaged hip and during the recovery process I’ve discovered that there is more to life than working 70 hours a week.  I am now enjoying good employees, who can take care of my store (and me) and give me the opportunity to enjoy my home and my three dogs more often.  I am planning on actually taking some vacation time this year, enjoying the beach this summer instead of just working through the tourist season at the beach.

Where would you like to see your company go long term?

The company is always growing and expanding. I think I’ve reached the point where I want to stabilize and not keep trying to re-invent the wheel.  It would be nice to settle down with the products I like best and that sell the most and expand the market.   As any business person will tell you, I’d like to work smarter, not harder.

Is there anyone or anything special that has inspired you?

I’ve been particularly inspired by a couple of really good soap makers who offered me their expertise when I started and have remained friends throughout the process.   When I was a freelance photographer in Los Angeles, there was not much camaraderie among photographers.  I think we all thought we were competing for the same accounts.  I’ve found that the truly good soap makers know how to relax and believe there are enough dirty people to go around.  I’m inspired by Sandy Maine and Leslie Plant sharing thoughts and ideas with me, being a sounding board, and being my “peer group” without feeling that we are competitors.  I’m generally inspired by anyone who has a dream and accomplishes it by sticking to it. Someone told me early on that the key to success in work is showing up.  I have showed up for work nearly every day since then.  I see people who complain that they don’t have any business, or that they can’t get ahead, and yet, when I walk by their store or their workshop, they are not there.  You can’t succeed if you don’t show up.

Cutting2Does your company have a motto or philosophy that you would like to share with us?

Our company motto (and registered trademark) is “Cleaning up the world one person at a time.”   It seemed a clever saying when we trademarked it and began using it as a promotional catch phrase many years ago, but it has become truer than we realized.  Being in a summer resort town, many visitors buy our soap to take home to the person who is feeding their dog, taking in their mail, or watering their plants.  Those people often enjoy our products, and see our website on the packaging and become customers.  At holidays and birthdays, they often send our products to their friends who enjoy them and find our website on the packaging and then order for themselves and for THEIR friends.  And so it continues and what started out as a small cottage business in a rented single wide trailer has now truly become a worldwide business.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced while seeing your company to where it is today?  How did you overcome or handle this challenge?
My biggest challenge has been twofold:  I realized fairly early on that I cannot do all that I want to be done in the business alone.  Single soap makers must struggle with ordering ingredients, making products, finding venues to sell the product, advertise, promote and then go do the sales.  They must do the bookkeeping, the taxes, the running of the company.  There are way too many jobs for one person to do and still have enough time to make and sell products.  Being a bit of a control freak, it was hard for me to let go of any aspect of my business, but I learned early on if I was to be successful, I’d need help.  It’s been an ongoing battle to get and keep competent help—people who share the same values and goals as I do and who want to see my company grow and succeed.  I’ve found that the way to overcome this is to just keep replacing employees who are just looking for a paycheck until eventually you end up with employees who want to work for a successful company and want to be part of that success.  It’s hard, time consuming, and often feels like a losing battle, but in the end when you have quality employees helping you to succeed, it is all worth the effort.

Do you have any advice for soap makers, natural skin care enthusiasts or small business owners that are just starting out?

As I said before, SHOW UP.  I hear people say all the time “you are so lucky to have your own business.”  Luck is a small part of it.  "Stick-to-it-iveness” is the key.  You don’t succeed in anything by trying to see if you can do it for awhile.  You succeed by making a decision to do whatever it takes to accomplish your goal.  I have many people say “It must be so nice to have your own business and just work whenever you want.”  My response is “yes, I can choose whichever 70 hours a week I want to spend at work.”

I see that you offer soap making classes at your workshop. Can you tell us a little about that experience?

I teach soap classes, both here at my Milford Soap Plant and at schools throughout the east coast.  It seemed at first that I may be shooting myself in the foot to teach people to make soap who may then become my competitors.  I’ve learned several things:  Those who will make soap, will do so whether I teach them or not, and many of those who come to learn to make soap find out how difficult and expensive it is and decide that they are better off just buying mine.  So it’s been a good experience. I think most of my students enjoy learning about soap making, about my business, how I got started and what it takes to make good soap and what it takes to have a soap business. Most make soap once so they can say they’ve done it and then decide that mine is better and cheaper and become my customers. A few have the determination and have gone on to start successful companies.  Successful soap makers helped me when I was getting started. I’m happy, and somewhat proud, to give back some of what I have learned over the years.

How long have you been a customer of FromNatureWithLove.com?

I started buying from From Nature With Love in 1997.  I think Kibby and Jay were also just starting out and were relatively small.  I’d often call and talk to them, ask questions, ask about ordering ingredients or about getting me something that I needed but couldn’t find.  It was sort of nice to have a CEO to CEO relationship with them.  Though we have different businesses, I feel like we grew up together and it’s nice to have a business relationship that has lasted through the years.

What are your favorite ingredients that FromNatureWithLove.com carries?

I tend to stick with the same things month after month.  We get a lot of Emulsifying Wax from FromNatureWithLove.com and Stearic Acid for our lotions.  My favorite things are the exotic oils and clays and salts.  I love to experiment with them and often use them in specialty items, items for other companies, or just for things that I’m making for myself and my friends.

Please tell us why you purchase through FromNatureWithLove.com.

I purchase from From Nature With Love because Kibby and Jay took care of me when I started my company.  I called and talked to them personally and because they were a young company, they took the time to help me any way they could.  I’ve stuck with them ever since, knowing if I need to, I can call and ask for them to call me back.  It’s a good feeling to know the owner of the company, to feel like they value your business, and to feel like “we’re all in this together” somehow.

All Natural Jeanie

Jean Lozada has always loved lotions and perfumes.  She even has described herself as a “product junkie”, but after having allergic reactions to commercial products she became a faithful label reader, and began to have doubts about the many products that she loved so dearly.  These doubts inspired Jean to begin researching herbs, essential oils, and other natural alternatives.  She soon began creating her own bath and beauty products and sharing them with her family and co-workers.  In 1998, Jean launched her own company, All Natural Jeanie, and now sells a gorgeous variety of products online.

I met Jean personally through The Natural Beauty Workshop, but she has been a great customer of FromNatureWithLove.com for years.  I was delighted when she agreed to participate in our customer interview series.

Do you have any other great passions or hobbies (besides natural skincare and entrepreneurship)?

My only real passion is natural skincare.  Everything else pales in comparison.

Is there anyone or anything special that has inspired you?

My husband just retired from the U.S. Army and he is the inspiration behind the G.I. fragrance line.

What are some of your signature products?

Dsc01468_2 My signature product is my roll on perfume.  It is not overpowering, but it has staying power.  It is one of my best sellers.  Women love it and guys love it on them.  Also, my lotions are rich & thick, but what sets my company apart from the rest, in my opinion, is my fragrance blends.  Smitten (Neroli and Vanilla), Intrigue (Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang), and G.I. (Patchouli, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, and Vanilla), which is dedicated to service members, are customer favorites.  These fragrances fly off the shelf.

Does your company have a motto or philosophy that you would like to share with us?

Our Motto is:” Have fun doing what you love.”

What inspired you to go into business?

I have always wanted to create my own destiny and live life on my terms, beholden to no one but myself.  Starting my own business has allowed me to fulfill that self created prophecy.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced while seeing your company to where it is today?

The biggest challenge has been staying organized and prioritizing.  This is still a day to day struggle.

Do you have any advice for soap makers, natural skin care enthusiasts or small business owners that are just starting out?

Learn as much as you can about your craft.  Research all aspects of the business.  Try to find someone who is doing what you want to do and see if they will be gracious enough to share their experiences with you.  Starting a business is a lot more in depth than just having a good product or a hook for your product. Be a sponge.  Soak up as much knowledge as you can, and if after doing all of this you feel that it is still something that you want to pursue then go for it. Give it everything that you have.  Most of all, “Have fun doing what you love”.

Dsc01535_2 Please tell us why you purchase through FromNatureWithLove.com.

I am a loyal customer because they offer everything that I need.  The website has so much information besides supplies.  The customer service has always been impeccable and the quality of the oils is second to none.  By the way, I was not paid to make this glowing endorsement.

We’d like to thank Jean for participating in our Featured Customer Interview Series.  For more information on All Natural Jeanie, and to view Jean’s products online, visit her web site at AllNaturalJeanie.com.

If you are a small business owner or have a career in natural skin care and would like to be interviewed on The Natural Beauty Workshop please let us know.  We would love to hear your story!

Cindy's Herbal Soaps, LLC

Cindy Smithson of Cindy’s Herbal Soaps, LLC has been a wonderful customer of ours for over two years.  Cindy started her Pennsylvania based business in 2006.  She specializes in home made soaps, but also carries a variety of bath and body products, natural candles, and a line of charming gift baskets.  Cindy is simply a delight to do business with and we were thrilled when she agreed to give us an interview.

How did your business get started?
I began making soaps in the late winter of 2006.  I was buying so many products to combat the winter dry and flaky skin both my husband and I suffered from. As I researched, I realized making my own soaps would go a long way in bringing moisture back into our skin.  They did!  After many trials and errors, and then the interest from my former coworkers who tested my products and showed their enthusiasm, Cindy’s Herbal Soaps, LLC came to be!

What has been your biggest challenge as a small business owner?  How did you overcome this challenge?
My biggest challenge was getting into a market here when I didn't know many people.  My husband and I moved out of state last year.  I applied for a Farmer's Market in a town close by.  There was already a soap maker there, in fact, there were two!  One of the vendors at the market called me and asked if I'd like to be a vendor at a new Farmer's Market.  Since she already had a soap maker she asked if I could make more candles and still carry some soaps.  I agreed and that was my start!  Once I got into that market, I became friends with the other vendors.  When the vendor next to me, who has become a wonderful friend, asked me if I would be interested in another Farmer's Market, I agreed.  Now both of the Farmer's Markets have given me great feedback, repeat customers, and openings into other areas for my products.  A friend has a shop in historic Gettysburg and she carries my products. I made samples of all the soaps I make.  I take them with me where ever I go, as well as business cards.  I can give them to B&B owners, or markets or shops as well as potentially new customers.  I have gotten an account that way with a B& B in town as well.

What has been your most rewarding moment so far?

A doctor in Orlando Florida (Dr. Scott Levine) and I became friends on line when I ordered his great fiber drink.  I told him I was making homemade soaps and coworkers were buying them.  I told Scott that I wanted to start my own small business and asked if he would try my soap and tell me what he thinks.  Within a few months I sent him my Milky Oatmeal Swirl soap.  When he received it, his son had just begun the agony of chicken pox.  Scott had one bar so he cut the bar in half and gave the other half to his son.  His son took three showers that day and told his dad that he had felt some relief!  Dr. Levine has endorsed my soap since then and I will always think of that story when I think of Dr. Scott Levine!  He is a wonderful person and friend!

Do you have a philosophy or a company motto that you would like to share with us?
I believe we live in a high stress world.  My goal is to help people to feel better about their skin while enjoying a scent from a favorite memory.  Possibly allowing them to take a step back away from the stress!  When someone smells one of my products and smiles, that is my reward!  When I get repeat customers and their wonderful feedback, I know I am doing what is right for my path in life!  I am trying to help people realize that they need to be pampered as well!

Do you have any advice for other soap makers or natural skin care enthusiasts that are just starting out?
Research, research, research!  Take baby steps in establishing yourself.  The more care you give the baby steps, the better foundation you build for the future.  Carry samples and business cards at all times.  Look at the shops and markets in your area and check out your competition.

We asked Cindy if she had a favorite recipe that she would like to share with our readers.  She provided this wonderful formula that she calls Lavender Elbow Grease.

Lavender Elbow Grease

Ingredients
3 full Tbsp. of Castor oil
2 Tsp. of Beeswax
1 Tsp. of Shea Butter
1 Tsp. of Cocoa Butter
20 drops of Lavender, Bulgaria Essential Oil

Directions
In a double boiler, melt the wax with the Castor Oil.  Add the Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter and allow them to melt as well.  As it cools add half of the Lavender Essential Oil.  In a clean 2 oz. jar, add the other half of Lavender Essential Oil.  Pour the Castor Oil mix into the jar and allow to cool. After it is fully cooled, place a lid on the jar.  This formula is very rich, and great for cuticles and rough spots!

Cindy left us with some kind words regarding FromNatureWithLove.com.  Can you tell why we’re so fond of her?
I love the selection I get at FromNatureWithLove.com.  The bath and skin care ingredients, as well as the descriptions for use, give me great ideas.  I can log onto your site and get creative with planning my next new item or start planning for the holidays.  I love selecting the five sample Fragrance Oils!  I can try new fragrances and see if my customers like them as well.  The prices are great and I am always inspired to try something new from you!

We’d like to thank Cindy again for participating in our Featured Customer Interview series. To learn more about Cindy’s Herbal Soaps, LLC please visit their website.

SoapyLove

All hail the melt and pour queen, Debbie Chialtas. When I first encountered Soapylove's signature product, the Soapsicle, I was enchanted. Debbie has put a clean twist on one of our favorite sticky treats, the popsicle. Whether her Soapsicles are striped with rainbows, layered sandwich style, or embedded with surprises, it is hard to see them without smiling.

Soapsicles

But Soapylove doesn't stop at soapsicles. Debbie regularly stocks her Etsy shop with her many experiments in glycerin soap design. Some of her most whimsical creations have included:

Soap_tarts

Soap Tarts: rectangular shaped soaps that resemble a certain toaster favorite.

Madras_soap_bars

Madras Soap Bars: scallop edged bars, embedded with a delicately colored plaid design.

Maple_bar_soap

Maple Bar Soaps: square bars engraved with a wood grain design.

Heavenly_day_bars

Heavenly Day Soap Bars: Rectangular bars embedded with a cheerful landscape.

Dot_baby_shower_soaps

Baby Shower Soaps: polka dotted soap bars in a variety of cute shapes.

Soapylove got its start on Etsy.com. In a community of over 100,000 unique artists, many of which are soap makers, it can take a lot to stand out in the crowd. Debbie attributes her success to the bright colors and fresh designs that seem to keep her customers coming back for more. I myself, visit Soapylove often, just to see what Debbie has come up with next!

Debbie has agreed to give us a little question and answer action. Enjoy!

How did Soapylove get started?
When I was pregnant with my son, in 2005, I started Soapylove as a hobby, making soap bars and soapsicles just for fun.  It became a total obsession! Probably like most professional crafters, I was just making more than I could use or give away!  I wanted to keep making soaps but needed a way to offload it all.  Then I discovered Etsy and started selling online.  I started getting wholesale requests and the rest is history!

Do you have any other great passions or hobbies (other than natural skincare and entrepreneurship?)
My first creative love affair was in fashion.  I have a BFA in Fashion Design and have worked in the apparel industry for over 10 years.  However, I have found fresh inspiration in soapmaking and am ready to hang up my fashion design hat!

Can you share a little bit about your experience with Etsy?
I discovered Etsy while browsing through some Craigslist ads.  A seller was advertising his shop there.  Once I found Etsy, I was totally hooked.  The concept of having a simple shop that’s a part of a larger site is awesome, plus the ability to only list what you actually have to sell is perfect for me.  I was worried about having an online store where I could be oversold in a heartbeat.  The site is so cool and professional that I think it helps all sellers look better than they could on their own!

Does your company have a motto or philosophy that you would like to share with us?
Our motto is “Feel the Love!”  Everything should be quirky, fun, and unique.  Bright colors, wonderful fragrances, and surprising designs are what I try to bring to every new style I put out there.  I want my customers to know that they’re getting something special and that I really appreciate them!

What is the biggest challenge you have faced while seeing your company to where it is today?
Definitely juggling a career, a side business, and my family.  I handled this challenge by getting help (hiring independent contractors) and putting limits on the amount of orders I could fill.  My family and my career have to come before Soapylove, but I squeeze time in when I can and it seems to be working!
What has been the most rewarding moment in Soapylove history?
I think my most rewarding moment will be coming in 2009.  I just signed a contract to write a how-to book on glycerin soap crafting and I’m so excited!  It won’t be published until then, but I’m really looking forward to seeing my book in a store one day!

Can you share any special techniques, tips or hints for other Melt & Pour Soap makers?
My favorite thing to do with MP is combining colors within one soap design.  To do this well, you need non-bleeding colorants.  If you use FD&C colorants, your colors will start bleeding together within a few days (save FD&C’s for single color designs – they’re awesome for glassy, bright colors!).  Oxides and ultramarines are totally non-bleeding.  Buy them dissolved in glycerin for ease of use, but if you buy them powdered mix them into liquid glycerin, a few sprays of rubbing alcohol, or into your fragrance oil before adding to your melted soap base.

How long have you been a customer of FromNatureWithLove.com?
Since I started making soap in 2005.  I love browsing the site for all of the amazing options they have!

What are your favorite ingredients that FromNatureWithLove.com carries?
Definitely all of the colorants!  They have the most colors I have seen anywhere!

I'd like to send out a huge "Thank You" to Debbie for doing this interview with us. I have been a big fan of Soapylove for a while and am delighted to have gotten to know her better. You can get to know Debbie better too by visiting www.Soapylove.com, the Soapylove blog, the Soapylove Etsy Shop, or by trying out some Soapylove in person at one of the fabulous shops that carry Soapylove products. Walk in Beauty

The Natural Beauty Workshop is proud to present the next in our series of featured customer interviews. Vicki Garland is the owner and sole operator of Walk in Beauty, a home based company that creates and sells natural, and naturally inspired personal care products, such as soaps, lotions, and more.

Vicki_garland_2 Vicki’s first passion was dance. She became dedicated to the art at a young age, while living in St. Louis, Missouri.  After majoring in Modern Dance during college, Vicki continued to follow her passion for dance until the unfortunate loss of her mother in 1971.

At that time, Vicki stepped away from dance and became interested in horticulture. Very soon, this interest became her life's next great passion. She spent many years in career horticulture, working in design, teaching classes, and guest speaking. Her love of horticulture inspired her to study aromatherapy, herbalism, and flower essences, as well as becoming certified in the field of permaculture. Organic gardening also became a serious hobby of Vicki’s.

In 1981, Vicki Garland made her very first soap with the help of a friend. Throughout the years to follow, Vicki continued to make soap for her family, including her two children, Damon and Charity Rose. Vicki’s daughter told her recently that she couldn’t remember ever using any other soap growing up than what her mother had made.

When Vicki’s children began college in 2003, she began to make soaps and other bath and body products with a renewed fervor. Vicki described how the creation of her business soon followed, and how it helped to heal her emotionally after many personal hardships, including the passing of her husband in 2002.

“With the nest emptied, I was clearing out the studio and began to feel an impetus to create things… big batches of soap, lotions, herbal potions, and little by little, as though bringing itself to life, Walk in Beauty was born. And the parts of my heart that needed healing were growing into life. It’s been such a healing process for me. Every time I go “to work” I feel a sense of inspiration, well-being, and intuition that I use in all the formulas. I hope the healing I receive in making these products also comes through to everyone that uses them!”
-Vicki Garland

Vicki was kind enough to share her story with us on The Natural Beauty Workshop. Her wonderful story was followed by some intriguing questions and answers.

What are some of the signature products and elements of Walk in Beauty?
Walk_in_beauty_products_2The Harmony Elixir Sprays and the Blessings line may best represent the unique aspect that Walk in Beauty brings to the natural beauty industry. Not only do I go to great lengths to create pure, synthetic and chemical-free products for positive physical benefits, there is an uplifting psychological and spiritually energetic component in all of the products. These effects are brought about by the use of aroma-therapeutic essential oils, flower essences from several repertoires, specially energized water, and the infusion of Reiki and Qi healing. I have certification in healing Qigong (pronounced Chi Gung) and training as a Reiki Master. I use these energies in all the products.

Another aspect that’s special is our use of fresh plant material in our soaps. For example, organic Sugar Pie Pumpkin is steamed, pureed and added to the Spicy Pumpkin Walnut Soap. Fresh raspberries are mashed (complete with seeds that act as a natural exfoliant) into the Raspberry Peach Smoothie Bar. I love using plant material in the soaps. Three types of mint, all of which I grow, go into the Peppy Mint Wake-up Bar. Wild-gathered Sagebrush leaves go into the Taos Sage Smudge Soap, and wild-crafted wild rose petals are added to the Wild Rose Bar.

What are your immediate goals?
My most immediate need seems to be finding a good helper! I have a very personal relationship with all the products, and am invested in keeping the environment where they are made and packaged very clean, and clear of negativity. I wish I could clone myself. One of me could work in the office, the other one could formulate, and another could do the packaging and shipping. A right-hand person hasn’t shown up yet.

Where would you like to see your company go long term?
It’s tricky to see where I’d like to see my little business to go long term. It’s like trying to picture your newborn as an adult. At this point, I am just hoping I can keep up with all of it as people discover the products.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced while seeing your company to where it is today? How did you face this challenge?
Figuring out how to formulate products that would stay stable using minimum emulsifiers and no chemical preservatives has been very important to me, and has been a big challenge. Trial-and-error formulating has resulted in some losses, of course, but ultimately it has been a good way to learn. I’ve been very persistent in researching natural ways to emulsify and preserve with specific extracts and essential oils.

Since I do see the products as skin food, I try to educate customers to treat them as such, to refrigerate when possible and to use them fresh. I recommend that all the products be stirred or shaken regularly. Everything is made in small batches, and I stay on the small side of bottling so products will get used up when they are still very fresh.

Where are your products available?
Locals drop by my studio or shop by appointment. I’ve just recently gotten the Walk-In-Beauty.net website up and running. Some products are in a gallery/shop called Taos Homegrown in Taos, New Mexico. They are also available at Milagro Therapies Spa in Las Vegas, NM , and Body Evolution Spa in Bellevue, Washington.

Please tell us why you purchase through FromNatureWithLove.com.
FromNatureWithLove.com was my first supplier when I began. This company had (and still has) the best selection! Anything I need, I can find there. Plus, it was such fun to try the free Fragrance Oils with every order. The prices are fair and they are always adding new up-to-date products.

Does your company have a motto or philosophy that you would like to share with us?
"There is beauty above you,
there is beauty below you,
there is beauty all around you.
May you always walk in beauty."
-Navajo Prayer

To "Walk in Beauty" is to experience "heaven on earth." Create heaven in your experience of life and you will experience a heavenly existence, right here and now. May I touch myself, my life, and all others with beauty. May I walk this blessed beauty way. Great Spirit, may I walk in beauty.

Luisa New York – Handmade Soap and Natural Beauty

Portrait_of_gili Meet Gili Zilca, president and founder of Luisa New York – Handmade Soap and Natural Beauty. Born and raised in Israel, with an impressive background in chemistry and chemical engineering, Gili began her journey into the world of natural skincare with a unique understanding of the chemistry behind cosmetics. Started in 2003, Luisa New York now carries a sizable line of beautiful handmade soap and skincare products, online and in several retail locations. The company name was inspired by Gili’s mother, Luisa, who shares her name with the Mediterranean Lemon balm plant. According to Gili, this plant yields an essential oil with a fabulous scent and great aromatherapy benefits. Gili has graciously agreed to participate in our first featured customer interview.

How did you become interested in handcrafted and natural skin care?
I started Luisa New York in late 2003, after about a year of product experimentation and research. My background in chemistry helped a lot. I attended a chemistry-focused high school and served in the Israeli navy as a lab manager. I earned a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in both chemistry and chemical engineering, and worked for several years in the field. My dream during this time was to utilize my knowledge to develop new cosmetics and beauty products. Luisa New York is the fulfillment of that dream. I did not like working with synthetic materials in the labs, so my product line is natural and chemical free.

Does Luisa New York have a motto or philosophy that you would like to share with us?
I believe that my customers seek only the best of quality. Before any product is released, it has to pass “testing”. It is used by me, my family (including my kids), and my friends. If the entire test chain approves the product it “passes”.Green_tea_soap

What was the biggest challenge you have faced while seeing your company to where it is today?
The biggest challenge was (and still is) to make the company well known nationwide. The products are of very good quality. Once people use it, they would like to stick to it.

How did you overcome this challenge?
Luisa New York’s products are mainly sold through two channels: online, and in retail stores, gift shops, spas etc. Online, in addition to LuisaNewYork.com, the products are sold on Amazon.com and Shop.com. I’ve had products ordered online from the United Kingdom, Australia, Istanbul, Holland, and Canada.

When selling wholesale to retail stores, I believe in having a personal and friendly relationship with the owners. The key to success is understanding the individual needs of store owners, which vary significantly.

What are Luisa New York’s most popular products? Citrus_soap
The most popular products are the olive oil soap bars. In particular, the unscented bar which is 100% natural, free from fragrance, and from scent. This soap is so popular because it is good for sensitive skin, excellent to for facial use, and even works well on gentle skin like baby’s skin. The bath salts are also very popular. They come in different pure essential oil scents: peppermint, orange and lavender. I use a blend of coarse and medium grain sized salts. It works perfectly with the colors, and melts in the water in different rates. As a result the bath is very calming and long lasting.

What are your favorite FromNatureWithLove.com products?
I like the essential oils, fragrance oils, and the grain products. I have 2 new fabulous facial scrubs that include fantastic ingredients on FromNatureWithLove.com. The Rice Bran Powder, Lemon Peel Powder, Sandalwood Powder and the Chickpea Flour do fantastic work on the face. Everyone who ever used my “Lemon Peel Facial Exfoliate” or “Sandalwood Facial Exfoliate” has felt a great change on their face. It has a silky effect, cleans the face from blackheads, and leaves the skin clean and shiny. I love those new products!

Do you have any advice for fellow soap makers, natural skin care enthusiasts or small business owners that are just starting out?
Be passionate about what you are doing. Love it, and “run” to work.  First, write a business plan. Understand who your target buyer is and how you are going to market your products. Start with a small line of products and see how it is selling and what sells the best. Also, don’t let the business take over your life. Save a few hours every day and on weekends for yourself and your family.
