Rosemary Walnut Shampoo & Vinegar Rinse

This all natural shampoo combines Rosemary, Peppermint, and Oat Extracts to add shine and softness to your hair, while stimulating and conditioning the scalp.  Walnut Oil adds an extra does of moisturizing power to this already gentle shampoo.  This easy recipe is great for those who want to add shine and moisture to their hair, or need to help improve the condition of their scalp.

Vinegar Rinses help to balance the ph of your hair and scalp, while removing the build up that is left by shampoos and conditioners.  These rinses are especially important if you are using an all natural shampoo, such as a solid shampoo bar, or a Castile based shampoo.  This recipe includes a Rosemary and Walnut Infusion that can help add shine and softness to the hair. 

 

Rosemary Walnut Shampoo

Ingredients

14 ounces Aloe Castile Shower Gel Base

2 1/2 ounces Walnut Oil

3/4 teaspoon Rosemary Essential Oil

3/4 teaspoon Peppermint Select CO2 Extract

1 teaspoon Oat Oil CO2 Extract

Directions

Pour the Organic Liquid Castile Shower Gel Base into a medium sized mixing bowl.  Add the Walnut Oil to the bowl, followed by the Rosemary Essential Oil, Peppermint CO2 Extract, and Oat CO2 Extract.  Stir the mixture slowly, making to sure the combine all of the ingredients without creating too many bubbles.  Carefully pour the mixture into a Disc or Turret Capped Bottle.

Usage & Packaging

When you are ready to use your shampoo, shake well the redistribute the ingredients, then apply a small amount of shampoo to wet hair.  Work the shampoo into a lther and then rinse it with water.  If possible, follow with a Vinegar Rinse.  Our Rosemary Walnut Rinse would be ideal.

Rosemary Walnut Rinse

Ingredients

12 ounces Water

8 ounces Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

1/8 cup Rosemary Leaf 

1/8 cup Walnut Powder, Medium

Directions

In a small saucepan, combine 12 ounces of water with 1/8 cup of Rosemary Leaf, and 1/8 cup of Walnut Powder.  Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce it to a very low simmer.   Allow the liquid to simmer for 15 - 30 minutes, adding more water if necessary.  After simmering, allow the liquid to cool completely.  Once it has cooled, strain the solids from the liquid using a cheese cloth or fine mesh strainer.  Measure 8 ounces of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and pour it into a 16 ounce bottle.  Measure 8 ounces of the infused water, and pour it into the bottle along with the Vinegar.  Cap the bottle and shake well to combine the ingredients.

Usage & Packaging

To use your rinse, simply douse your wet hair and work the rinse through it with your fingers.  Afterward, rinse your wet hair with a little water to reduce the Vinegar smell while your hair is drying.  

Tip:  If you find this shampoo to be too heavy, try cutting it with 8 - 16 ounces of Distilled Water. 

Jasmine & Acai Berry Pomade

This all natural hair pomade can be used to add texture and moisture to hair.  Jasmine Floral Wax and Absolute adds a subtle fragrance, while nourishing Acai Berry Oil helps to moisturize and protect the hair.  This recipe can be used to add texture to all hair types.  For those with especially dry or coarse hair, Jasmine & Acai Berry pomade can be used as an intense conditioner.

Jasmine & Acai Berry Pomade
Makes about 3 ounces

Ingredients
1/2 ounce Acai Oil
2 ounces Shealoe Butter
1/4 ounce Beeswax
0.05 ounce Jasmine Floral Wax
1/4 ounce Fractionated Coconut Oil
5 drops Jasmine Absolute

Directions
In a double boiler, combine the Beeswax, Floral Wax, and Fractionated Coconut Oil.  Heat these ingredients until they are fully melted.  Next, add the Shealoe Butter and stir until it is just melted.  Quickly remove the mixture from the heat.  Add the Acai Oil and begin to whip the mixture until it cools slightly.  Add 5 drops of Jasmine Absolute and continue to mix the pomade.  After several minutes the mixture should begin to cool and thicken.  After the mixture had thickened up you can transfer it to a jar, and allow it to cool and set completely.

Usage and Packaging
This pomade can be packaged in glass or plastic jars.  Our White Flat Jars make a great choice for this recipe.  The pomade can be applied directly to the hair to add texture, style, and conditioning.  The pomade can also be applied to the ends of hair as a deep conditioning treatment.

Ayurvedic Hair Cream

This moisturizing hair cream combines soft, creamy Shealoe Butter with Amla Oil and Mahabhringraj Oil, two Ayurvedic Oils that are especially beneficial to hair care treatments.  Amla Oil can help to strengthen hair at the root, improve scalp condition, and encourage the growth of healthier hair.  Mahabhringraj Oil can help to inhibit the frequency of gray hair, and help prevent hair loss.  This mixture has a very soft, creamy texture, and can be used to help condition and style the hair.  Intensely moisturizing, this formula would probably not be helpful to those with oily or fine hair.  I should also note that this formula has a very strong, herbal aroma, which may not be everyone's cup of tea.  You may want to add a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil, or Jasmine Absolute to give this hair cream a more pleasant aroma.

Ayurvedic Hair Cream
Makes about 4 ounces.

Ingredients
1 ounce Amla Oil*
1 ounces Mahabhringraj Oil*
2 ounces Shealoe Butter

Directions
Gently melt the Shealoe Butter over medium heat in a double boiler.  As soon as the Shealoe Butter has softened into a liquid, remove it from the heat and add the two Ayurvedic Oils.  Whip the mixture until it cools. The cream should thicken slightly as it cools down, but will not become firm.  If desired, add a few drops of your favorite Absolute, Attar, or Essential Oil.  Jasmine Absolute would be a great choice.  Transfer the mixture to a clean jar and allow it to cool completely.

Usage and Packaging
This intensely moisturizing hair cream can be used in very small quantities to add targeted moisture, or to help a hair style hold its texture.  Ayurvedic Hair Cream may be especially effective when applied to the ends of the hair, or when it is rubbed into the scalp as an overnight treatment.  Please note that this formula may be too intense for some hair types.  Experiment with a small amount before using a lot of product.  Ayurvedic Hair Cream can be packaged in any 4 ounce jar.  I particularly like using Flat White Cream Jars for this formula.

Ayurvedic Hair Rinse

This aromatic herbal hair rinse is infused with a blend of hair loving Ayurvedic Herbs.  Haritaki Powder has astringent properties that help to balance the hair's moisture.  Hibiscus Petal Powder is great for the scalp.  It helps to nourish, condition, and stimulate the hair at its roots,  improving scalp condition which can lead to the growth of happier, healthier hair.  This rinse also includes two staple hair rinse ingredients, Apple Cider Vinegar and Rosemary Hydrosol.  Apple Cider helps to cleanse the hair, removing residue and buildup left over from everyday shampoos, conditioners, and hair products.  It also helps to balance the ph of the scalp and hair.  Rosemary Hydrosol adds shine, balance, and stimulation.

This rinse has a very potent, herbaceous aroma.  If the scent is too intense for you, try adding a few drops of Jasmine Absolute, Rose Essential Oil, or Lavender Essential Oil to an equal amount of Polysorbate 20, and mixing it into the rinse.

Ayurvedic Hair Rinse
Makes about 16 ounces

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups Distilled Water
2 tablespoons Haritaki Powder
2 tablespoons Hibiscus Petal Powder
1/2 cup Rosemary Hydrosol
1/2 cup Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

You Will Also Need
A Cheesecloth or a Large Tea Bag

Directions
Bring 1/2 cups of Distilled Water to a boil, add powdered herbs and stir well.  Reduce heat to low simmer, cover, and allow to gently boil for 30 minutes.  Remove the mixture from heat and allow to cool completely.  After the infusion has cooled completely, strain it through a cheesecloth and into a mixing bowl or pitcher.  The mixture may have to be strained more than once to remove all of the plant material. 

Alternatively, you can add the powdered herbs to a Large Tea Bag to avoid the messy process of straining the herbs.  Using an iron, seal the Hibiscus Petal Powder and Haritaki Powder into a Large Tea Bag prior to beginning this recipe.  Boil the water, add the tea bag, reduce to simmer, and allow the water to gently boil (covered) for thirty minutes.  Allow the mixture to cool completely before removing the tea bag and moving on the next step.

Add the Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Rosemary Hydrosol to the mixing bowl or pitcher and stir well.  If you are adding any optional scent to the rinse, do so now.  Pour the mixture into snap or disc cap bottles.

Usage and Packaging
PET or HDPE Plastic Bottles with Snap or Disc Caps make great applicators for herbal hair rinses.  After shampooing, simply douse your hair with the rinse, allowing all of your hair to be saturated.  You may rinse your hair again with water, or leave the mixture in your hair.  While the scent of the vinegar and rosemary will wear off after your hair has dried, the Ayurvedic herbs may leave a slight aroma in your hair if you choose not to rinse.

Fruit & Vegetable Hair Oil

Fruits and vegetables are an essential part of any healthy diet.  Great for your body, but how about your hair?  This hair oil treatment was inspired by a food group that is loved by some, hated by others, and needed by all.  This simple formula is composed of five fruit and vegetable ingredients that each bring something unique and beneficial to the table. (No pun intended)

Broccoli Seed Oil is a surprisingly useful ingredient.  It lends shine and moisture to hair formulas without making them too heavy.  Blueberry Seed Oil is one of nature's most potent sources of antioxidants!  Its easily penetrating texture keeps this hair oil on the light side.  Jojoba Oil does not come from a fruit or vegetable, in fact, it comes from a nut.  But I just couldn't leave it out of a hair oil!  It's composition is very close to hair's natural conditioner, sebum.  Jojoba acts as an intensive conditioner, while helping to shield hair from damage.  Watermelon Seed Oil is an all around favorite ingredient of mine.  Traditionally called Ootanga or Kalahari Oil in Africa, it has been used for generations in African skin and hair care.  It is highly moisturizing and like its accompanying ingredients, non-greasy.  Helio Carrot Root (Total) CO2 Extract is is rich in beta carotene and vitamins A and E, making it a highly nutritive addition to the recipe.

Fruit & Veggie Hair Oil

Ingredients
1/4 ounce Jojoba Oil                                  
1/2 ounce  Broccoli Seed Oil                               
1/4 ounce Blueberry Seed Oil                               
1 ounce Watermelon Seed Oil                           
25 drops Helio Carrot Root Total CO2 Extract 

Directions
Combine all ingredients in a measuring cup and mix well.

Packaging
This recipe makes about 2 oz. of hair oil.  I recommend using a high density plastic bottle with a disc cap or snap cap for easy use in or out of the shower.

Usage
This oil can be warmed gently before use, or applied at room temperature.  Massage a small portion of oil into your hair and scalp.  Leave this conditioning oil in your hair for between 10 and 30 minutes.  Shampoo you hair as usual, adding another conditioner if needed.  Some people may need to shampoo twice to eliminate all of the oil from their hair. 

Herbal Hair Rinse

I plan to create many recipes with our new line of Organic Hydrosols, but the first thing I wanted to create was a vinegar based hair rinse. Apple Cider Vinegar is very effective at removing the excess buildup of residues left by shampoos and conditioners. Hair rinses are often paired with solid shampoo bars, but they can benefit anyone. Using a hair rinse every one to two weeks helps to keep your hair from becoming dull and heavy. While vinegar does have a strong aroma, you may be surprised to find that it fades completely once your hair is dried.

By adding hydrosols and herbal extracts to this rinse, we've made it extra special. Burdock Root helps to soothe the scalp, by reducing irritation, dandruff and promoting hair growth. Silica rich Oat Straw increases hair's softness and shine. Roman Chamomile's anti-inflammatory properties make a wonderfully soothing addition to this hair rinse. Dry, itchy scalps will love Chamomile Hydrosol. A classic ingredient for hair formulations is Rosemary. It is said to encourage hair growth, balance oily scalps and add shine and luster to dull hair.

This rinse is easy to make and a cinch to use. Just shampoo your hair as usual, then douse your hair with one to two ounces of the vinegar solution. Massage your hair to make sure that the solution reaches all of your hair, then rinse clean with water. The vinegar scent may linger on your hair until it is completely dry. After that, it will dissipate entirely.

Herbal Vinegar Hair Rinse 

4 ounces of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
2 ounces of distilled water
1 ounce of Organic Rosemary Hydrosol
1 ounce of Organic Roman Chamomile Hydrosol
1/8 teaspoon of Oat Straw Extract 10:1
1/4 teaspoon of Burdock Root Extract 4:1

Directions

In a small bowl, mix both powdered extracts with 2 ounces of warm water. Stir well until the powder has dissolved completely. Using a funnel or a very steady hand, pour the water into a clean, sterile, 8 ounce bottle. Next, add 1 ounce of each hydrosol, then 4 ounces of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. Close the bottle and shake well.

Packaging and Storage

If this rinse is used every week, one bottle should last about one to two months. It should be kept in a cool, dry, place. Any unused rinse should be discarded after 3 months. If you like, you can add some Grapefruit Seed Extract to aid in its preservation, but that is up to you. To retain maximum freshness, this rinse can also be stored in the refrigerator between uses. I would recommend packaging this rinse in a shower safe bottle, such as PET or HDPE plastic. I also like to use a snap, turret, or dish cap with this rinse. These types of caps are ideal for application.
