What about beeswax, coconut oil or butters (e.g. cocoa, shea, mango), which all form a light, protective barrier layer on the skin? And unlike petrolatum, they won't clog pores or irritate sensitive skin.

Yes, vegetable butters, soft waxes, lecithin and coconut oils, including Monoi de Tahiti and Virgin Coconut Oil, all create an excellent, light moisture barrier on the skin. Additionally, these emollients can be blended in different proportions to create lighter or heavier barriers as desired.
