Acai Oil

Acai_berriesThese deep blue rain forest berries are jam packed with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin C.  Acai berries are among the most popular of rain forest ingredients that have recently gained attention for their applications in skin care and spa treatments.  These nutritive berries are used to produce Acai Oil, an exciting new skin care ingredient that we are thrilled to carry on FromNatureWithLove.com.

Like other Berry Seed Oils, Acai Oil contains a high amount of antioxidants, helping to protect the skin from harmful free radicals and the oxidation of cells.  In addition to boasting a potent supply of antioxidants, Acai Oil is rich in the essential fatty acids Omega 6 and Omega 9.  These powerful components can help to combat the signs of aging by improving the skin's overall moisture, health, and appearance.  A hefty amount of vitamin C completes Acai Oil's amazing combination of benefits.  Stable sources of vitamin C for use in skin care are rare.   While vitamin C is famous for it's support of our body's immune system, it is also known to help rejuvenate and revitalize the skin by encouraging cell regeneration.

Acai Oil makes a wonderful choice for anti-aging formulations such as masks, serums, cleansers, and creams.  Due to its high antioxidant value it also makes a great addition to sensitive skin products.  This nutrient rich oil can be used directly on the skin or it can be blended with other nutritive ingredients to create skin nourishing formulas including massage blends, body butters, hair conditioners, and exfoliating scrubs.

Kapha Massage Bar

This warm colored massage bar is made primarily from the Ayurvedic Oil, Kapha.  Kapha Oil is made from a moisturizing Sesame Oil that has been infused with a carefully selected variety of herbs.  This herbal blend includes Ginger Lily, Agarwood, CedarWood, Turmeric, Sandalwood, and Cinnamon Bark.  Kapha Oil has a subtle, spicy aroma and provides a warming sensation while helping to increase circulation and stimulate the senses.  The Kapha Massage Bar is colored with Paprika to give it a warm orange tint on the top of the bar.

Kapha_1 Kapha Massage Bar

Ingredients
3 ounces Kapha Oil
1 1/2 ounces Babassu Butter
1 1/2 ounces Candelilla Wax
1/2 teaspoon Paprika Powder

Special Equipment
Fine Mesh Strainer or Cheesecloth
Massage Bar Mold

Instructions
Combine 1/2 ounce Babassu Butter, 1 ounce Kapha Oil, and 1/2 teaspoon Paprika Powder in a double boiler and heat for 10 - 15 minutes.  Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or a cheesecloth to remove the Paprika Powder.  After the oil has been strained return it to the double boiler and add 1/2 ounce Candelilla Wax.  Once the wax has melted completely pour the mixture into a Massage Bar Mold.  The first layer of this bar will have to cool completely before you add the second layer.  You may want to put the bar in the refrigerator while you prepare the oils for the second layer.  Clean and dry the double boiler than add 2 ounces Kapha Oil, 1 ounce Babassu Butter, and 1 ounce Candelilla Wax.  Heat the mixture until completely melted than pour over first layer in the Massage Bar Mold.  Allow the bar to cool completely before attempting to remove it from the mold.  Removing it prematurely can cause the bar to crack or break.

Usage
Gently rub the Kapha Massage Bar onto the skin.  When the bar contacts skin it should begin to melt.  Use the bar to coat a generous amount of oil onto the skin and then set it aside while you massage.  The Kapha Massage Bar should be packaged in a tin or cello bag when not in use.  Kapha Oil contains a sizable variety of herbs and spices.  Some skin types may be irritated by one or more of these herbs or spices.  If any irritation occurs discontinue use immediately and wash the skin with soap and water.

Loofah

Loofah11in_6 Often mistaken for some kind of exotic sea sponge, the Loofah is actually a plant from the zucchini family.  The Loofah, also sometimes called luffa or lufah, is an edible gourd that is popular is commonly consumed in many parts of the world.  Loofah is most well known in the United States for its use as a skin exfoliant.  Dried Loofah can be used as scrubby sponges during the bath or a shower.  They can also be sliced or ground and added to soaps and scrubs.

FromNatureWithLove.com carries a wide range of Loofah products, including 4, 6, 8, and 11 inch Loofah Sponges.  The longest Loofahs double as great back scratchers, making them a very handy tool in the bath and shower.  FromNatureWithLove.com also carries a selection of Loofah Bath Accessories including Loofah Discs in circular and specialty shapes,  and Loofah/Terry Pads.

Basic Facial Masks for Men

Facial Masks are a great way to give your skin a quick burst of whatever it is craving.  These three recipes are simple to prepare and are designed for three common skin types and can be easily adjusted to accommodate substitutions or extra ingredients.  While these mask recipes were created with men in mind, they can certainly be used for women's skin as well.

For Dry Skin
2 Tablespoons Fine Oatmeal
1 Tablespoon Whole Milk Powder
1 Tablespoon Honey Powder
1 Tablespoon Rose Petal Powder
1 Tablespoon Organic Rosehip Oil
1 - 2 Teaspoons Roman Chamomile Hydrosol

For Normal Skin
2 Tablespoons Moor Mud
1 Tablespoon Yellow Sandalwood Powder
1 Tablespoon Coral Calcium
1 Tablespoon Honey Powder
1 - 2 Teaspoons Carrot Seed Hydrosol

For Oily / Acne Prone Skin
2 Tablespoons Dead Sea Mud
1 Tablespoon Moroccan Rhassoul Clay
1 Tablespoon Neem Powder
1 Tablespoon Honey Powder
1 - 2 Teaspoons Lemon Balm Hydrosol

Instructions
To prepare any of these facial masks begin by combining the dry ingredients in a small bowl.  Mix the dry powders well, then add any water based liquids, followed by oil based liquids.  When adding the liquid ingredients make sure to add just enough to create a smooth paste.  If you add too much liquid the mask will be too thin to apply to the face.

Usage
Dampen the skin with a clean towel moistened with warm water.  Apply a thick layer of mask to the face, avoiding sensitive spots such as the eyes and mouth.  Allow the mask to dry for 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing away.  Apply toner or moisturizer as needed after rinsing the mask.

Honey

Honey Honey makes a surprisingly beneficial ingredient in natural skin care products.  Honey is naturally packed with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties making it a helpful addition to acne, combination skin, and sensitive skin formulations.  It also helps to soothe, soften, and tone skin, making it a great ingredient in masks and facials.

Honey is a water soluble ingredient which naturally contains a small amount of water.  This makes formulating with fresh honey somewhat challenging.  It cannot be mixed into lotions, balms, or oil based formulas without the use of an emulsifier and although Honey has natural anti-bacterial properties, it is not resistant to all forms of bacteria and microbes.

Dried Honey Powder and Honey Granules offer a more stable way to include Honey in your products.  Both dried Honey products are water soluble but can be easily incorporated into dry products such as dry mask mixes, body powders, milk baths, bath teas, and more.  Honey makes a great component in soap free cleansers.  Try combining Honey Powder with Fine Oatmeal and your favorite Hydrosol for a quick and easy natural facial cleanser.

To incorporate the aroma of honey into your products you can either add a synthetic Fragrance Oil or Floral Water, such as our Honey Original Fragrance Oil or our Lemon Honey Floral Water, or you can incorporate Honey Absolute.  Honey Absolute is a solvent extracted, oil soluble derivative of real honey.  It is extremely thick and sticky, more so than natural Honey.  It has a texture comparable to that of molasses or caramel, and a light, but delicious aroma.

Diver's Balm

Snorkeling_key_largo_dad_divesEarlier this month I visited family in The Florida Keys and was lucky enough to spend one of those days snorkeling off the coast of Key Largo.  I come from a very aquatic family, my father being an avid scuba diver, and my mother's family being Maine fishermen.  You could say that a good portion of my childhood was experienced in and under water.  Snorkeling in Key Largo was a wonderful experience, but after two 45 minute dives I couldn't help but notice that my lips felt like someone had tried to pickle them.

Since my dear Papa spends so much time underwater I decided to create a special balm to help protect his lips from the salty sea water.  This specially formulated Diver's Balm is designed to quickly moisturize and soothe divers' dry lips.  Jojoba Esters have been added to increase the hardness and melting point of the balm, helping it stay solid after being left on a hot boat.  Divers can use this balm between dives and after a dive is completed.  I've left the balm unscented as fish can be very sensitive to scents in the water and the last thing a diver wants to do is scare off the wildlife.

Diver's Balm

Ingredients
1 ounce Red Raspberry Seed Oil
1/2 ounce Calendula Oil
1/2 ounce Kukui Nut Oil
1/2 ounce Kokum Butter
1 ounce Beeswax
1/4 ounce Jojoba Esters, MP70
1/4 teaspoon Lecithin
1/4 teaspoon Seabuckthorn Berry CO2 Extract

Instructions
Combine the Beeswax, Kokum Butter, and Jojoba Esters in a double boiler and warm until both are fully melted.  Next, add the Oils and Lecithin.  Mix the formula well and remove it from heat.  Allow the mixture to cool for a few moments then add the Seabuckthorn Berry CO2 Extract. Mix again and pour into containers.  To get your balms to have a nice looking top you should initially fill them to about 3/4 of the way up.  After the balms have hardened slightly fill the tubes the rest of the way. This will help to avoid a sinkhole from forming at the top of your balm.

Packaging and Usage
In addition to being used as a lip balm, this special divers balm can be used on other areas of dry or sun burnt skin as well.  The recipe I've created should yield enough balm to fill six lip balm tubes as well as one stick tube container.  Since this balm is designed to be extra hard you may have to warm it slightly on your skin before it softens enough to be used.

My father has been diving for over 25 years and has explored underwater places all over the world.  Occasionally my sisters and I are treated to some fantastic photographs of his latest adventures.  Here is a sampling of some great ones we've received on the past few years:

Scents for Men's Skin Care

Selecting scents for male consumers can be especially challenging.  The range of aromas that men prefer can seem limited in comparison to the vast array of fragrances that are marketed toward women.  However, with the right ground rules in mind, it is possible to create a wide variety of natural, aromatic blends that men will adore.

When formulating for men, it is best to start out with the basic types of aromas that they tend to prefer.  Most male fragrances are composed of woods, waters, and spices.  Vanilla also makes a great base for male fragrances and blends. When you are building a unique aroma, remember to keep the basics of perfumery in mind.  Base notes, mid-notes, and top notes must be combined thoughtfully to achieve the best possible result.  Here are some popular Essential Oils and Absolutes for use in male oriented blends.

Top Notes

Basil
Eucalyptus
Grapefruit
Lemongrass
Mandarin
Spearmint

Mid-Notes

Super Scrub Hand Wash

The men in my life tend to come home from work with hands so dirty they don't just defy belief, they defy soap!  Wash as they may, sometimes dirt, grease, paint, and other tenacious substances require more than a gentle hand washing to be eliminated.  Chock full of exfoliating Walnut Shell Powder and Green Illite Clay, this all natural Castille based liquid soap scrub is sure to help even the grubbiest hands get clean.Sink_2

Super Scrub Hand Wash

Ingredients
Aloe Castille Shower Gel Base - 2 Ounces
Liquid Castille Soap Base - 2 Ounces
Green Illite Clay - 2 Tablespoons
Walnut Shell Powder, Fine - 2 Tablespoons
Orange Essential Oil - 1/2 teaspoon or 3 ml
Peppermint Essential Oil - 1/2 teaspoon or 3 ml
1 - 2 Teaspoons of Distilled Water

Instructions
Add 2 Tablespoons of Green Illite Clay to a small bowl.  Slowly add the water to the clay, mixing constantly.  After the water is evenly distributed in the clay, slowly add the Liquid Castille Soap Base, mixing constantly.  When the clay has been fully dispersed (without any clumps) add the Aloe Castille Shower Gel Base. Next, add the Walnut Shell Powder and the Essential Oils.  Mix well, then carefully pour the mixture into a 4 ounce bottle with either a pump or a disc cap.

Packaging & Usage
I packaged this recipe in a 4 ounce PET Boston Round Bottle with a Black Pump.  The pump does stick now and then, but overall the mixture flows through the pump easily.  You could also try packaging this soap scrub in a PET or HDPE Bottle with a Snap or Disc Cap.  To use, simply massage a small amount onto wet hands before rinsing away.  The scrub should help to release tenacious dirt and grime while leaving the hands feeling clean and refreshed.

Scott Blackson & The Soap Fairy, Inc.

Mold_pour As is the case with many successful soap makers, Scott Blackson, owner of The Soap Fairy, Inc. stumbled into soap making through a stroke of fate.  While taking classes toward his master’s degree in natural health, Scott was prompted to create soap for one of his classes.  During his research he found that most recipes at that time were based on animal ingredients.  Being a vegetarian, Scott was inspired to create his own soap recipe.  It was love at first batch.  Very soon, Scott’s love of soap making overflowed his home.  To make room for more soap, bars were gifted into the hands of family and friends.   When the recipients returned for more soap, Scott’s new hobby began sprouting into a new business.  Through hard work, determination, and lots of soap making, Scott’s business has passed the 12 year mark with a 2000 square foot soap factory, two retail locations, and seven employees.

Being one of our earliest FromNatureWithLove.com customers, Scott Blackson and The Soap Fairy, Inc. are particularly near to our hearts.  We were very excited when Scott agreed to participate in our Interview Series

What are some of the signature products, elements or differences about your company that set it apart from the rest? What makes your company special?

Our signature products include a line of “Sea Soaps”.  Since we are in a summer resort town near the beach, we have soaps that have light, breezy, ocean-y scents, with names like “Down by the Seashore”, “Ocean Breeze”, “ Seaweed”, etc.  We make lotions to match and we offer custom bath salts as well.

We also have a newly designed men’s line, featuring bold masculine scents and newly updated packaging.  Our men’s soaps are packaged in black boxes.  The after shave lotions are in black bottles.   The look is decidedly masculine as are the three fragrance blends.  Each scent blend is available in soap, after shave lotion and skin exfoliating scrubs.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I am a jack of all trades with a short attention span.   I like to be creative in many different ways.   Running a soap company gives me the opportunity to move through many projects throughout the day from scent blending, recipe development, web design, and designing and writing the company newsletter.   My background is in photography.  I was a freelance photographer in Los Angeles in the 80’s and believe it or not, my inspiration for making soap came from my love of color and texture and creating something from scratch.  The scent blending came naturally to me and added another dimension to the creativity of other art forms.  Being a vegetarian and fairly health conscious, I became appalled at all the junk in the food we eat and then discovered that the junk is even worse in the products we put on our skin.  I’ve set out to make products that have fewer bad ingredients, many more good ingredients and products that are still fragrant, colorful and fun to use.

Do you have any other great passions or hobbies (other than natural skincare and entrepreneurship?)

I am a wannabe artist.  I currently am taking pottery courses (and if hand print ashtrays and tiny bowls ever make a come back, I’m likely to start a new business).  I love working with my hands.  I bought a “fixer upper” house several years back.  It had “good bones” but was built in the 1940’s.  There is always a project for me to work on if I can find the extra time.  I am also a student of American Sign Language and have an interest in signing and the deaf culture.

Where are your products available?
You can find everything we make on our website at www.soapfairy.com, or at either one of our two retail stores:  One is in Milford, DE and the other is in Lewes, DE.  If you happen to be in Japan, you can find them at Tree of Life handmade soaps stores, or at various gift and retail shops throughout the U.S.

What are some of your immediate goals for The Soap Fairy, Inc.?

My immediate goals are to settle down and enjoy life a bit.  I’ve worked way too many hours over the last 10 years.  My business had totally consumed my life.  I recently underwent surgery to repair a damaged hip and during the recovery process I’ve discovered that there is more to life than working 70 hours a week.  I am now enjoying good employees, who can take care of my store (and me) and give me the opportunity to enjoy my home and my three dogs more often.  I am planning on actually taking some vacation time this year, enjoying the beach this summer instead of just working through the tourist season at the beach.

Where would you like to see your company go long term?

The company is always growing and expanding. I think I’ve reached the point where I want to stabilize and not keep trying to re-invent the wheel.  It would be nice to settle down with the products I like best and that sell the most and expand the market.   As any business person will tell you, I’d like to work smarter, not harder.

Is there anyone or anything special that has inspired you?

I’ve been particularly inspired by a couple of really good soap makers who offered me their expertise when I started and have remained friends throughout the process.   When I was a freelance photographer in Los Angeles, there was not much camaraderie among photographers.  I think we all thought we were competing for the same accounts.  I’ve found that the truly good soap makers know how to relax and believe there are enough dirty people to go around.  I’m inspired by Sandy Maine and Leslie Plant sharing thoughts and ideas with me, being a sounding board, and being my “peer group” without feeling that we are competitors.  I’m generally inspired by anyone who has a dream and accomplishes it by sticking to it. Someone told me early on that the key to success in work is showing up.  I have showed up for work nearly every day since then.  I see people who complain that they don’t have any business, or that they can’t get ahead, and yet, when I walk by their store or their workshop, they are not there.  You can’t succeed if you don’t show up.

Cutting2Does your company have a motto or philosophy that you would like to share with us?

Our company motto (and registered trademark) is “Cleaning up the world one person at a time.”   It seemed a clever saying when we trademarked it and began using it as a promotional catch phrase many years ago, but it has become truer than we realized.  Being in a summer resort town, many visitors buy our soap to take home to the person who is feeding their dog, taking in their mail, or watering their plants.  Those people often enjoy our products, and see our website on the packaging and become customers.  At holidays and birthdays, they often send our products to their friends who enjoy them and find our website on the packaging and then order for themselves and for THEIR friends.  And so it continues and what started out as a small cottage business in a rented single wide trailer has now truly become a worldwide business.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced while seeing your company to where it is today?  How did you overcome or handle this challenge?
My biggest challenge has been twofold:  I realized fairly early on that I cannot do all that I want to be done in the business alone.  Single soap makers must struggle with ordering ingredients, making products, finding venues to sell the product, advertise, promote and then go do the sales.  They must do the bookkeeping, the taxes, the running of the company.  There are way too many jobs for one person to do and still have enough time to make and sell products.  Being a bit of a control freak, it was hard for me to let go of any aspect of my business, but I learned early on if I was to be successful, I’d need help.  It’s been an ongoing battle to get and keep competent help—people who share the same values and goals as I do and who want to see my company grow and succeed.  I’ve found that the way to overcome this is to just keep replacing employees who are just looking for a paycheck until eventually you end up with employees who want to work for a successful company and want to be part of that success.  It’s hard, time consuming, and often feels like a losing battle, but in the end when you have quality employees helping you to succeed, it is all worth the effort.

Do you have any advice for soap makers, natural skin care enthusiasts or small business owners that are just starting out?

As I said before, SHOW UP.  I hear people say all the time “you are so lucky to have your own business.”  Luck is a small part of it.  "Stick-to-it-iveness” is the key.  You don’t succeed in anything by trying to see if you can do it for awhile.  You succeed by making a decision to do whatever it takes to accomplish your goal.  I have many people say “It must be so nice to have your own business and just work whenever you want.”  My response is “yes, I can choose whichever 70 hours a week I want to spend at work.”

I see that you offer soap making classes at your workshop. Can you tell us a little about that experience?

I teach soap classes, both here at my Milford Soap Plant and at schools throughout the east coast.  It seemed at first that I may be shooting myself in the foot to teach people to make soap who may then become my competitors.  I’ve learned several things:  Those who will make soap, will do so whether I teach them or not, and many of those who come to learn to make soap find out how difficult and expensive it is and decide that they are better off just buying mine.  So it’s been a good experience. I think most of my students enjoy learning about soap making, about my business, how I got started and what it takes to make good soap and what it takes to have a soap business. Most make soap once so they can say they’ve done it and then decide that mine is better and cheaper and become my customers. A few have the determination and have gone on to start successful companies.  Successful soap makers helped me when I was getting started. I’m happy, and somewhat proud, to give back some of what I have learned over the years.

How long have you been a customer of FromNatureWithLove.com?

I started buying from From Nature With Love in 1997.  I think Kibby and Jay were also just starting out and were relatively small.  I’d often call and talk to them, ask questions, ask about ordering ingredients or about getting me something that I needed but couldn’t find.  It was sort of nice to have a CEO to CEO relationship with them.  Though we have different businesses, I feel like we grew up together and it’s nice to have a business relationship that has lasted through the years.

What are your favorite ingredients that FromNatureWithLove.com carries?

I tend to stick with the same things month after month.  We get a lot of Emulsifying Wax from FromNatureWithLove.com and Stearic Acid for our lotions.  My favorite things are the exotic oils and clays and salts.  I love to experiment with them and often use them in specialty items, items for other companies, or just for things that I’m making for myself and my friends.

Please tell us why you purchase through FromNatureWithLove.com.

I purchase from From Nature With Love because Kibby and Jay took care of me when I started my company.  I called and talked to them personally and because they were a young company, they took the time to help me any way they could.  I’ve stuck with them ever since, knowing if I need to, I can call and ask for them to call me back.  It’s a good feeling to know the owner of the company, to feel like they value your business, and to feel like “we’re all in this together” somehow.

Peach Kernel Oil

Peaches

The light, penetrating texture of Peach Kernel Oil makes it a natural choice for use in skin care and massage.  Peach Kernel Oil can be used to create lotions and creams that are perfect for summer skin.  This moisturizing oil is great at nourishing the skin without leaving a greasy feel.   Peach Kernel Oil is rich in Vitamin E, making it a popular choice for mature skin formulations.  The presence of Vitamin E also helps to make Peach Kernel Oil quite stable, having an average shelf life of up to two years.  The stability and light, moisturizing texture of Peach Kernel Oil make it a great ingredient for soap making.  Soap making recipes can often be adjusted to replace Sweet Almond Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, or even Grapeseed Oil with Peach Kernel Oil.  However, any soap recipe should be run through a lye calculator whenever an ingredient is changed.  Peach Kernel Oil can also make an effective substitute for these oils in lotion, balm, or body oil recipes.  Their similar textures make them relatively interchangeable in simple bath and body formulations.

For a limited time FromNatureWithLove.com is offering 16 oz. bottles of Peach Kernel Oil at 40% off!  Visit our Sales & Specials Page for details.
